Personality:
Jade Ellsworth was a girl growing up in a small town outside of Des Moines, Iowa. She had loving parents, a close relationship with her older brother, and the life of a typical preteen. The biggest drama in her life was upcoming soccer games against rival teams and finding a date to the school dance. But at the age of thirteen, her life took a dark turn. On the way home from soccer practice one day, Jade and her mom were in a car crash that deeply changed Jade’s life. Her mother died in the crash, but Jade through her own mysterious powers or through another power, was able to pray her mom back to life. However, her mom did not come back the same, and instead hated Jade for bringing her back, going as far as to call her a demon. Jade’s mom’s harsh behavior toward her and ultimate suicide, greatly affected Jade and her personality did a complete 180. Gone is the sweet, happy girl, and in her place is an angry and depressed teenager who deeply misses her mom and is consumed by that grief and remorse. Jade assumes the role of the outcast teenager and begins acting out- pushing her brother and father away, crushing on and stalking one of her high school teachers, and setting fires that land her in jail several times. When Jade is accepted to the prestigious boarding school Morning Glory Academy (MGA), Jade sees it as a way to get away from her family and the small town where she believes she can never belong.

Of course, Morning Glory Academy is far from your typical prep school. Along with the rigorous course load one would expect from a prestigious academy, Jade and her new classmates also find themselves involved in a mysterious and dangerous plot involving time travel, supernatural elements, and teachers that wouldn’t mind seeing some of the students dead. Jade is predictably the student having the hardest time adjusting to life at Morning Glory Academy. Being experimented on within days of her arrival and only surviving due to a daring rescue by her classmates couldn’t have helped. Now Jade’s burdened with nightmares, visions of her own future, and what she believes to be a divine message telling her that she has to die. With these experiences, it’s no wonder Jade feels as if her life totally sucks.

Jade may seem to be nothing more than a typical emo teenager, and in some ways she fits the stereotype perfectly. She keeps a journal of dark poetry, will talk at length about the many ways her life sucks (it’s an ever-growing list, if you ask her), and is prone to dramatics, emotional breakdowns, and a sullen nature. She almost seems to thrive on her own melodrama and is obviously troubled. Her fellow students don’t seem surprised by Jade’s frequent crying breakdowns or even her attempt to drown herself during one very intense detention session, for they’ve already deemed her as the “emo one” and frequently joke about it. Jade definitely has a bit of an attitude problem, and more importantly she doubts if she can be happy or make anyone else happy, and repeatedly tells others this. She tends to view the world through very pessimistic eyes, and for Jade, even something as simple as misplacing her journal or terrible cell phone service can seem like the end of the world. Her pessimism isn’t helped by the fact that the issues she faces are often much more severe than the problems of a typical teenager. Years of seeing herself as an outsider have made Jade question her own worth. She’s insecure and when the people running MGA tell her she’s “just a worthless birthday girl” and thus disposable, she can’t help but take their words to heart despite having evidence to the contrary. Jade’s also convinced that others don’t “get her” and can’t relate to the problems she’s faced. This attitude definitely helps Jade keep many of her classmates at arm’s length. But when her defenses are down, there are hints of the happier girl she once was.

Jade has a quiet (and sometimes not so quiet) strength, even as she experiences new traumatic events. She has her depressive moments, but Jade doesn’t want to die, she only believes she has to, a point she makes clear. She’s determined not to go down without a fight. Jade’s fought for her survival on multiple occasions and beat the odds, including one extremely eventful day when she managed to survive three different people threatening to kill her in under an hour. Jade would never think of herself as a particularly resilient person, but there’s something to be said for her ability to survive a life-threatening situation. Jade repeatedly finds herself kidnapped or threatened at gunpoint, but she always manages to survive these encounters, something no one else at her school can say. Her resilience isn’t something she recognizes, but it has helped her survive increasingly precarious situations.

Jade is growing into quite the survivor, but she’s still vulnerable. She’s often dependent on others, in particular Casey, the self-assigned leader of the new students and Jade’s closest friend at school. This dependency goes so far that some of their classmates remark on the fact that Jade seems to blindly follow Casey’s lead and question whether Casey has Jade’s best interests at heart. Despite others’ comments, Jade holds strongly to her friendship with Casey, grateful for everything Casey’s done to protect her and defending Casey’s actions.
Jade’s time as an outcast back home has made her rather withdrawn, but even so, she’s not afraid to speak her mind when it really matters, often to the point of losing her composure. She is quick to anger and quick to break down when she’s feeling overwhelmed by a situation, prone to crying fits and emotional outbursts that some of her classmates would rather not deal with, making rude comments whenever Jade gets emotional. Jade can have quite the temper, and it comes out whenever she’s fighting for something or someone she believes in. This includes defending her friends and asking what she believes to be the really important questions about MGA, most importantly why they’re there.

Jade may not be the easiest person to befriend, but she is extremely loyal to the friends she has, having incredible faith in them and helping them in any way she can. She cares deeply, maybe even too much, for her friends and family, which is part of why her mom’s anger toward her and death affected Jade so much. The people in her life are very important to Jade and she would do almost anything for them. When Casey has a plan to escape MGA, Jade helps her without question, trusting that Casey will come back for her and covering for Casey despite the danger it puts Jade in. This loyalty extends beyond her true friends, to anyone she sees as as a comrade. Jade may consistently call one of her classmates an asshole, but when his life is threatened, she saves him because he’s “their psychotic asshole”. It’s this loyalty and Jade’s faith in others that gives her strength. Jade may put up a rebellious front, one that portrays her as a person who likes being alone,, but she craves connections with other. Even as she pushes her dad and brother away following her mom’s death, they’re still on her mind and her dad’s the first person she calls when she runs into trouble at school. Even during her troubled time at MGA, Jade starts to gain more faith in herself and begins to acknowledge her own strength and worth, as she struggles to overcome her past and build her own better future.
