CHARACTER
Character Name: Jade Ellsworth
Character Age: 16
Canon: Morning Glories
Canon Point:Post Issue #46
History: Jade’s character page and a general page for the comic.
Personality:
Jade Ellsworth was a girl growing up in a small town outside of Des Moines, Iowa. She had loving parents, a close relationship with her older brother, and the life of a typical preteen. The biggest drama in her life was upcoming soccer games against rival teams and finding a date to the school dance. But at the age of thirteen, her life took a dark turn. On the way home from soccer practice one day, Jade and her mom were in a car crash that deeply changed Jade’s life. Her mother died in the crash, but Jade through her own mysterious powers or through another power, was able to pray her mom back to life. However, her mom did not come back the same, and instead hated Jade for bringing her back, going as far as to call her a demon. Jade’s mom’s harsh behavior toward her and ultimate suicide, greatly affected Jade and her personality did a complete 180. Gone is the sweet, happy girl, and in her place is an angry and depressed teenager who deeply misses her mom and is consumed by that grief and remorse. Jade assumes the role of the outcast teenager and begins acting out- pushing her brother and father away, crushing on and stalking one of her high school teachers, and setting fires that land her in jail several times. When Jade is accepted to the prestigious boarding school Morning Glory Academy (MGA), Jade sees it as a way to get away from her family and the small town where she believes she can never belong.

Of course, Morning Glory Academy is far from your typical prep school. Along with the rigorous course load one would expect from a prestigious academy, Jade and her new classmates also find themselves involved in a mysterious and dangerous plot involving time travel, supernatural elements, and teachers that wouldn’t mind seeing some of the students dead. Jade is predictably the student having the hardest time adjusting to life at Morning Glory Academy. Being experimented on within days of her arrival and only surviving due to a daring rescue by her classmates couldn’t have helped. Now Jade’s burdened with nightmares, visions of her own future, and what she believes to be a divine message telling her that she has to die. With these experiences, it’s no wonder Jade feels as if her life totally sucks.

Jade may seem to be nothing more than a typical emo teenager, and in some ways she fits the stereotype perfectly. She keeps a journal of dark poetry, will talk at length about the many ways her life sucks (it’s an ever-growing list, if you ask her), and is prone to dramatics, emotional breakdowns, and a sullen nature. She almost seems to thrive on her own melodrama and is obviously troubled. Her fellow students don’t seem surprised by Jade’s frequent crying breakdowns or even her attempt to drown herself during one very intense detention session, for they’ve already deemed her as the “emo one” and frequently joke about it. Jade definitely has a bit of an attitude problem, and more importantly she doubts if she can be happy or make anyone else happy, and repeatedly tells others this. She tends to view the world through very pessimistic eyes, and for Jade, even something as simple as misplacing her journal or terrible cell phone service can seem like the end of the world. Her pessimism isn’t helped by the fact that the issues she faces are often much more severe than the problems of a typical teenager. Years of seeing herself as an outsider have made Jade question her own worth. She’s insecure and when the people running MGA tell her she’s “just a worthless birthday girl” and thus disposable, she can’t help but take their words to heart despite having evidence to the contrary. Jade’s also convinced that others don’t “get her” and can’t relate to the problems she’s faced. This attitude definitely helps Jade keep many of her classmates at arm’s length. But when her defenses are down, there are hints of the happier girl she once was.

Jade has a quiet (and sometimes not so quiet) strength, even as she experiences new traumatic events. She has her depressive moments, but Jade doesn’t want to die, she only believes she has to, a point she makes clear. She’s determined not to go down without a fight. Jade’s fought for her survival on multiple occasions and beat the odds, including one extremely eventful day when she managed to survive three different people threatening to kill her in under an hour. Jade would never think of herself as a particularly resilient person, but there’s something to be said for her ability to survive a life-threatening situation. Jade repeatedly finds herself kidnapped or threatened at gunpoint, but she always manages to survive these encounters, something no one else at her school can say. Her resilience isn’t something she recognizes, but it has helped her survive increasingly precarious situations.

Jade is growing into quite the survivor, but she’s still vulnerable. She’s often dependent on others, in particular Casey, the self-assigned leader of the new students and Jade’s closest friend at school. This dependency goes so far that some of their classmates remark on the fact that Jade seems to blindly follow Casey’s lead and question whether Casey has Jade’s best interests at heart. Despite others’ comments, Jade holds strongly to her friendship with Casey, grateful for everything Casey’s done to protect her and defending Casey’s actions. Jade’s time as an outcast back home has made her rather withdrawn, but even so, she’s not afraid to speak her mind when it really matters, often to the point of losing her composure. She is quick to anger and quick to break down when she’s feeling overwhelmed by a situation, prone to crying fits and emotional outbursts that some of her classmates would rather not deal with, making rude comments whenever Jade gets emotional. Jade can have quite the temper, and it comes out whenever she’s fighting for something or someone she believes in. This includes defending her friends and asking what she believes to be the really important questions about MGA, most importantly why they’re there.

Jade may not be the easiest person to befriend, but she is extremely loyal to the friends she has, having incredible faith in them and helping them in any way she can. She cares deeply, maybe even too much, for her friends and family, which is part of why her mom’s anger toward her and death affected Jade so much. The people in her life are very important to Jade and she would do almost anything for them. When Casey has a plan to escape MGA, Jade helps her without question, trusting that Casey will come back for her and covering for Casey despite the danger it puts Jade in. This loyalty extends beyond her true friends, to anyone she sees as as a comrade. Jade may consistently call one of her classmates an asshole, but when his life is threatened, she saves him because he’s “their psychotic asshole”. It’s this loyalty and Jade’s faith in others that gives her strength. Jade may put up a rebellious front, one that portrays her as a person who likes being alone,, but she craves connections with other. Even as she pushes her dad and brother away following her mom’s death, they’re still on her mind and her dad’s the first person she calls when she runs into trouble at school. Even during her troubled time at MGA, Jade starts to gain more faith in herself and begins to acknowledge her own strength and worth, as she struggles to overcome her past and build her own better future.
Inventory: Jade will be entering with the clothes on her back (her school uniform paired with her signature converse) and her messenger bag, which will have her journal, an assortment of school supplies, black eyeliner, and her cellphone (which currently has no service).
Abilities:
Most of the kids at Morning Glory Academy have something special about them, but the details of this special skill are unclear and still being revealed. For Jade, part of her special ability seems to be that she can travel to the future in her dreams, even conversing with a future (possibly alternate universe) version of herself. These dreams are especially strong when she’s under the influence of a drug the nurse at MGA gave her or following a near death experience. Jade’s “eyes were opened” during this process and she continues to have vivid nightmares nearly constantly after this event, though not all of these dreams are the special, prophetic dreams. Jade gets physically ill, throwing up violently, after her special dreams and having her eyes opened seems to have had a permanent lasting effect on Jade- she reports throwing up several times a day along with the chronic nightmares.
Additionally, Jade has the capability to resurrect people from death, though this is another ability that she has very little understanding of. Jade was able to pray her mother back to life after their car crash, but Jade is unsure if this was through a power she possesses or through another power, such as the demonic power that her mother always asserted it was. Because of how badly her first foray into resurrection went, Jade is uninterested in using or exploring this ability. When one of her classmates kidnaps her and asks her to resurrect his boyfriend, Jade at first refuses, telling him that no one wants to come back. Eventually, she tries to bring their friend back to life, in order to save her own life, but she’s unsuccessful. Jade clearly has some very strong supernatural abilities, but she has very little control or understanding of them and little desire to ever use them.
When it comes to other skills and talents, Jade likes to think she’s a decent writer, though that really depends on your test. She writes a lot of very questionable emo poetry. Jade is also a skilled seamstress, making her own gothic styled dresses and other clothing items. She used to play soccer before her mom’s death and was good at it, but it’s been years since she put her athletic abilities to any use. Jade also knows how to shoot a gun, with canon hinting that her dad and brother taught her how to shoot. She’s a decent shot despite it not being an interest she’s actively pursued since her mom’s death.
Flaws:
Jade can be both very self-centered and very negative. She has a special knack for focusing on how much her life sucks and genuinely believes that her life is so much worse than everyone else’s. This fuels into her belief that no one understands her. She’s also extremely melodramatic, quick to jump to the worst case scenario in nearly every situation. Jade is also very insecure, doubting her own worth and abilities. It goes beyond just normal teenage insecurities and is very deeply ingrained in her. She’s emotional and is not good under pressure, often panicking in unhelpful and unhealthy ways when things go wrong. Jade also has quite the temper, quick to anger and lash out when she’s upset. Additionally, she’s never developed the best coping methods unless small acts of arson are considered healthy.

chaos clothing and pandemonium bookstore and cafe info

Jade is the current owner and manager of not one, but two stores in Bavan! Chaos Clothing is a clothing store and tailor shop she received from Mana and Pandemonium Bookstore and Cafe she inherited from Enjolras when he left. Below is a summary of details!

Pandemonium Bookstore and Cafe
Location: Bavan

Summary: A Book Store and Cafe that doese more than just sell books and coffee. Enjolras put a lot of work into making Pandemonium a neutral haven for monsters and locals alike. They host meetings and gatherings for the Changed (a word Enjolras insisted on) and the new arrivals. Pandemonium employees can also be found out in force when newbies arrive, distributing fliers, coupons and literature.

Description: There are two main parts to the store: The cafe and the bookstore! The cafe serves a variety of beverages, including fancy coffee drinks, and baked goods, as well as sandwiches and other lighter fare. There is a seating area of tables and chairs for people to enjoy their purchases at. Also, in the cafe area Jade will often post notices at the request of monsters on a bulletin board behind the counter and she keeps informational fliers at hand.

The bookstore portion has a wide array of books, both new and old. Jade is always up for suggestions of more books to stock and she works hard to curate a diverse selection. Scattered around the shop are comfy arm chairs and couches for people to enjoy reading books. It has a very homey feel and especially during the winter months she keeps a fire running in the fire place. She's also installed thick curtains to make the store accessible to monsters with sun aversions even during the day.

Employee List See comment below! As a note, there is a standard uniform for employess at Pandemonium. People have a choice of wearing black slacks/black pleated skirt, a black button up shirt (tie or bow optional in either gold, black, or burgundy) and a burgundy vest with the Pandemonium logo embroidered in gold. A coat over the vest is optional and managerial staff can opt for a gold vest instead! The other option is a burgundy dress (that since Enjolras' departure have been hemmed to a couple inches above the knee if requested) paired with black tights or knee-high socks. Cafe staff will also be provided with a black half-waist apron with gold piping and the Pandemonium logo embroidered in the top left corner. Jade has also supplied all of the staff with black hoodies with the Pandemonium logo embroidered in gold on the left chest to wear when greeting newbies or on causal work days.

Chaos Clothing
Location: Bavan

Summary: A clothing and tailor shops specializing in modern fashions with a goth edge! Jade designs and makes most of the clothes the store sells though she's started to outsource some of her most popular items. Everything can be adapted to monster types and she provides free alterations on clothing bought from the store if someone's monster changes make in unwearable. She also makes custom items and does alterations of clothing not purchased at her store. She's also started doing a sizable amount of business with local teenagers who are intrigued by her modern fashion offerings and she keeps a stock of clothing for humans as well.

Description: Pulled from her first post about the shop!

The store itself is rather small, but Jade has managed to do a lot with the space she has. It's a bit crowded, though she'll say it gives it a nice, homey, eclectic feel. The floors are a dark wood, the wood walls painted a light grey, and black curtains that block out all sunlight (perfect for those monsters adverse to the sun) hang on every window, able to be closed in case she decides to start having daytime hours. The store is well lit, with industrial looking overhead lighting paired with black paper lanterns, that are more decorative than function, but Jade just had to add them. There are also a few dress forms scattered throughout the store, most wearing complicated looking dresses that any goth teenager would dream of wearing.

Across from the entrance is a long wall with several floor to ceiling bookshelves containing her starting inventory, mostly hoodies, jeans and t-shirts that can be easily altered to fit monsters with wings, tails, and other extra appendages that make wearing typical clothing difficult. Between the bookshelves are two full length mirrors, each with a framed painting of a skeleton cameo girl hung over it. In front of the shelves is a long wood table with more neatly folded clothing on top of it.

To the left, there is another long wood table, this one though appears to be a sewing work space and there is a stack of bolts of fabric behind it. There's also a door with the word "Private" painted on it in black script and an artsy (or at least Jade thinks so) skull and crossbones.

To the right, against the far wall of the store, there are two dressing rooms set up, each made out of the same black curtains that cover the windows. There's another full length mirror, this one with a painting of a black rose above it, between them and this section of the store is covered in a plush purple carpet. There's also a Victorian style couch and chair, that Jade had spent a good portion of her budget to buy and have recovered in dark purple velvet, to create a cozy sitting area and separate the dressing rooms from the rest of the store.

Against the wall across from the bookshelves is the register, as well as a long clothing rack with some dresses and more tailored clothing such as jackets and corsets and skirts way shorter than anything stores in Bavan typically sell. Behind the register, the store name is painted in a deep purple script, surrounded by paintings of various constellations.

Employee List: See comments below! There's no uniform but Jade will encourage her staff to wear modern clothing and offer all employees three full outfits of their choice for free when they start their jobs!

VISUAL REFERENCES:
human form by [plurk.com profile] poisonparfait

VISIBLE CHANGES IN HUMAN FORM:
Basic form: Looks exactly like her former non-monster self, but in gray-scale. Her skin is the palest of greys, nearly white, with dark freckles which stand out harshly. Her hair has gone from its red to a dark grey color. Has 5 small star runes that look like glittery black tattoos on the inside of her left writs and 4 on the inside of her right wrist. Only corporeal in this form. Takes a high level of concentration to keep this form.
Eyes: Entirely white, both pupil and iris, and glowing. The sclera is a dark inky black. Can no longer generate water from her lacrimal glands, thus instead a black mist is released from her tear ducts when she cries. Enhanced vision in the dark.
Shadowy aura: Black shadowy aura that changes in intensity and appearance with her emotional state. When calm, takes the form of a black mist that surrounds her. When extremely upset, the mists shifts to a black shadow which is reminiscent of fire. Aura shifts between these two forms depending upon her moods.
Prehensile tendrils: Three tendrils of shadows that look like large flames which jut out from her back. Are tangible and can hold objects. Are about a meter long in resting state, but can grow when she's emotionally charged.
Weakness to light: Direct contact is painful. Causes her skin to become translucent until she can no longer hold her human form. Always carries a black umbrella with her.

VISIBLE CHANGES IN SHADOW FORM:
Basic form: Composed entirely of black shadow, though there are enough nuances in shades that you can still make out a humanoid shape. Same height as in her human form, though skinnier, especially her limbs. The shadows, like her aura, are reminiscent of fire, parts of the shadows jutting off like flames. Incorporeal in this form and can pass through solid objects. Due to shape-shifting abilities, default shadow form also includes two bat-like wings made of shadows, each one about a meter long. The runes are a dark purple color in this form.
Eyes: Same white glowing eyes as in human form.
Voice: Quieter than usual, sounds like an echo no matter how far or close you are to her.
Heartbeat: Still present, though it's quieter than that of a normal human and is a bit echo-y, like her voice.

Weakness to light: Too much direct sunlight forces her into her shadow form. Will begin to shrink until she disappears if exposure continues.
Skeletal features: Some skeletal bones are visible, notably her skull and ribcage.

ABILITIES AND HUNGER:
Telekinesis: Ability to lift and move objects with her mind. Currently, can only lifts objects that should be able to physically lift. Close to the limit of her physical limitations, she becomes exhausted after only a few minutes of lifting it telekinetically. Needs to be relatively close to an object to move it. Currently, takes all of her focus and is prone to dropping things if she is interrupted/distracted.
Disrupting electronics: Unconsciously disrupts the function of electronics, especially when upset. Has no conscious control of this ability.
Shapeshifting: Ability to alter form adding features with concentration. Bat-like wings are the main feature she shifts to in her shadow form, though this can include extra limbs/claws/etc. and extend her already longer limbs. Human form is an extension of these abilities.
Pain relief: Ability to relieve pain from others through physical contact. Must be touching area where pain is. Can take on all pain of another via possession.
Need to feed on human souls: Must consume a soul at least once a month, preferably every two weeks. Becomes more and more difficult for her to use her abilities and for her to hold her solid form the longer she goes between meals. Does not need to consume other foods for sustenance, though she still tries to eat normal meals, though most foods have a strange aftertaste.

MISC:
Cothing: Dresses mostly in black, with a general teenaged goth/emo style. Lots of black dresses/skirts paired with tights/knee high socks and skinny jeans and hoodies. Always wearing either converse or boots. Wears accessories like arm warmers and wrist cuffs. Lots of stripes. Favorite colors to wear are black, grey, purple. Makes all her own clothes. Have some style inspirations: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Makeup: When in human form, Jade always wears black nail polish and lots of black eyeliner.

upcoming hiatus!

Hey everyone! Posting this now while I still have the brainpower to remember everything I'm going to say...

Starting this Friday, I'm embarking on a whirlwind interview trip to various graduate programs in hopes that I get accepted to a biology PhD program! If my first interview trip is anything to go by, I am awful at threading during these trips and awful at all social interaction in general unless you want to discuss science with me. Thus! I'm calling a semi-hiatus for the next month, and will be calling a two week complete hiatus in Aather soon (Feb. 9-23rd, but I'll post a reminder when the time comes).

What this all means is that I'll have limited availability from January 30th through March 3rd. If you need me anywhere during that time feel free to ping me on plurk, shoot me an email, or just comment to this post and I will do my best to get there ASAP. Thank you all in advance for bearing with me! ♥ ♥ ♥

This applies to Jade|Lyra at Aather and Vanya, Jade, Norman, Cosima, and Cassie at CFUD.
